A rich repertoire of the performing arts is developing and inviting audiences to the theatre. Petra Brylander is the artistic director & CEO of Uppsala City Theatre.

I am so pleased to lead Uppsala City Theatre, one of Sweden’s best theatres. A fantastic ensemble and a strong position in the city, but also in the field of the performing arts in Sweden. Petra Brylander, theatre director & CEO

Petra Brylander is the theatre director & CEO of Uppsala City Theatre since August 1, 2016. Prior to coming to Uppsala, she was the theatre director of Malmö City Theatre since 2007. Petra is a board member of the Swedish Performing Arts Association, an employers’ and industry association, as well as board director of the Swedish Performing Arts Coalition, a member organization for the Swedish performing art sector.

Petra is recognized for her leadership and ability to discover new talent and possibilities for the theatre stage. Her artistic vision is to take into regard all of the expressions of the performing arts. Her engagement in the arts includes the audience experience, as well as what it means for a city theatre to be a vibrant and creative meeting place.

Uppsala City Theatre produces international co-productions and attracts an ever growing number of spectators to Uppsala. The Broken Circle received accolades from audiences and media alike in the Fall of 2019. After two seasons at Badisches Staatstheatre Karlruhe, Germany, The Broken Circle returns to Uppsala City Theatre Spring 2021. The prized production, 3 winters, was invited to Ruhrfestspielen in Recklinghausen, Germany May 2020, before the festival due to the Corona pandemic was cancelled.

A focus on gender equality and support of female directors is promoting more young directors, for example Melody Parker and Helle Rossing. Melody directed Vildanden (2019). Helle Rossing’s latest production at Uppsala City Theatre is Eliten – Esse, non videri (2019), was created as part of this year’s graduation production projects from the Stockholm University of the Arts.

Long-standing collaborations with new music theatre written by Erik Gedeon (Den fria viljan 2018); Meningen med döden 2020) and international collaboration with the German director Anna Bergmann (Carmen 2016, The Broken Circle 2019) are offered along with large-scale musical theatre productions directed by Ronny Danielsson. Still more music is presented live on stage in even more dramatic works. On December 5, 2020, Barnen från Frostmofjället will premiere directed by Kajsa Isakson, and with compositions by Viktor Brobacke.

Uppsala City Theatre offers a wide set of programs and performances for children and youth, for schools, families and students. In August 2021, Uppsala City Theatre will tell the story of Loranga, Loranga presented outdoors and under the open sky.

Another area in focus at Uppsala City Theatre are civic talks with reflections on current times. In the Spring of 2018, Petra Brylander presented Samtid!, a series of talks with guests from different media and academia, followed by mini concerts. Since the fall of 2019 Mallas salong offers a new set of meetings with directors, actors and authors.

Petra is a graduate of the Malmö Theatre Academy. She has worked as an actor in theatre, tv, film and radio, and is a publish dramatist for the stage and radio. Also, she has completed the leadership program at the Swedish Performing Arts Association, and regularly lectures on leadership and artistic process as well as conducts teaching on occasion at the Malmö and Luleå Theatre Academies.
